Bird Protection Project
Our Bird Protection Project was launched in 2016. During 2016 and 2017, we donated bird nest boxes to 11 schools in Kisvárda and the surrounding area. The boxes were installed together with the students, raising awareness of the importance of bird conservation.
Some of our native bird species are cavity nesters, meaning they nest in natural tree cavities or holes created by woodpeckers in the trunks and branches of older trees. A growing conservation problem in both urban and agricultural areas is the lack—or complete disappearance—of trees thick enough to support the formation of such nesting holes. Our aim is to counter this negative effect by installing artificial nesting boxes.
The nest boxes were crafted by one of our members, Tamás Miskolczi. Most of the donated boxes were Type "B", which feature a medium-sized entrance hole and are suitable for species such as great tits, sparrows, and nuthatches. We also offered Type "C" and Type "D" boxes. Type "C" is more open-fronted, and is preferred by birds like wrens, robins, and wagtails. Type "D" boxes are similar in design to Type "B", but are larger and suitable for species such as hoopoes, tawny owls, and even starlings.
