Our Collaboration with the Jacaranda Foundation

03/06/2016

Our association has entered into a strategic partnership with the Jacaranda Foundation in Malawi. The foundation operates a primary and secondary school in Malawi, where over four hundred AIDS orphans can attend for free. 98% of the children have lost their parents to AIDS, and many of them are HIV positive.

This collaboration is not new. Our association has previously supported the school. For example, last year we donated thousands of books to the school.

The books (nearly 3000 English-language books) are now part of the library collections managed by the Jacaranda Foundation. The foundation runs two libraries at its primary and secondary schools, where 400 orphaned and semi-orphaned children study for free (in Malawi, only primary education is free of charge). Additionally, they opened three more libraries in surrounding communities in the past year.

The current agreement consists of two parts:

  • The Jacaranda Foundation owns several hectares of farmland in Malawi, which will provide food for the school, with assistance from Planetrise's experts.
  • Planetrise will send volunteer teachers for six-month to one-year terms.

Marie da Silva, the founder of the school (CNN Hero), who leads one of the country's most recognized international charitable organizations, has often mentioned that it would be a great help if English-speaking volunteer teachers could come to the school to teach local children for an entire school year.

We are waiting for volunteers to apply.
