Hungarian Culture Day

22/01/2020

Since 1989, January 22nd has been celebrated as Hungarian Culture Day, commemorating the day when Ferenc Kölcsey finalized the manuscript of the Hungarian national anthem, Himnusz, in Szatmárcseke in 1823. Until the 19th century, Hungary did not have an official national anthem; both Catholics and Protestants had their own folk hymns.

The Hungarian national anthem became official in 1989 with a modification of the Hungarian Constitution: "The anthem of the Hungarian Republic is the poem Himnusz by Ferenc Kölcsey, with music by Ferenc Erkel."
