The AHU XVII. Medical Mission to Malawi Has Started
The members of the 17th medical mission of the Hungarian Africa Society (Magyar Afrika Társaság) have arrived in Malawi, settled into the house of the Hungarian Cultural and Commercial Centre (HTCC), and have already begun their work. This time, neurosurgeons from the National Clinical Neuroscience Institute have come to Africa. Csaba Szeremley, a member of our association, reports on the first experiences, as he is coordinating the medical mission for the second time this year in Malawi.
"The team arrived at Blantyre International Airport on Sunday afternoon, where Dr. Patrick Mukvena, a local neurosurgeon and the only one of his kind in the country, was waiting for us. On Monday morning, we visited Queen Elizabeth Hospital. The team toured the neurosurgery department and delivered the 10 boxes of donations they had brought, which mainly consisted of medications and medical equipment.
On Tuesday, surgery was already underway. The first patient was a 10-year-old girl who had a tumor in the posterior cranial fossa. The surgery was successful, and the girl woke up well, with no complications.
The condition of the second child was so severe that, just a few days before our arrival, an emergency procedure had been performed to keep them alive until the Hungarian team arrived. In the end, our doctors removed a large, bleeding brain tumor. Currently, the little patient is in the intensive care unit, and we eagerly await the opportunity to visit her."
