Renovation Works Around Castle Lake in Kisvárda
As the end of the year approached, we carried out some work around the Vár-tó (Castle Lake) in Kisvárda. We replaced the previously installed paper-based information boards along the educational trail with weather-resistant metal boards.
The boards were made by our association, and we also installed a few new birdhouses.
Habitat Reconstruction Project
The management of the Kisvárda Castle and its surrounding area, which is a locally protected natural area, is carried out by our association. According to research, the larger lake on the southern side of the castle and the smaller lake on its western side are remnants of the moats that once surrounded the castle. In its time, the marshy area served as a natural defensive line.
The larger, three-hectare Vár-tó, located on the southern side of the castle, has a rich wildlife. However, the reintroduction of certain significant species is expected in the coming years. This is part of the habitat reconstruction project that started in 2015, which led to the designation of the Kisvárda Castle and its surroundings as a locally protected natural area.
The lakes and their surroundings near the castle are surrounded by neighbors such as the Öreg-tó (Old Lake), Nádas-tó (Reed Lake), and other special nature conservation areas belonging to the Natura 2000 network. These, along with the Vár-tó as a wetland habitat, provide similar conditions for species that prefer aquatic environments. Accordingly, there is a possibility of certain Natura 2000 target species appearing in the immediate vicinity of the castle. The preservation of these species and their habitats is an important task and responsibility for all of us.
