Visit to Planet Aid UK

24/09/2017

Recently, the president of our Association, Péter Gergő Juhász, visited the UK-based organisation Planet Aid UK to explore possible areas of cooperation between Planetrise and the British organisation. Representing Planet Aid UK, Mrs Birgit Soe and Mr Torben Soe made several suggestions aimed at strengthening the impact of environmental and nature protection programmes on a global scale.

During the discussions, the issue of waste management in Visk (Ukraine) was brought up. The mayor and local council of Visk have reached out to our Association, requesting assistance in sourcing used waste containers and garbage trucks. Given the large number of second-hand bins and vehicles in the UK, we asked for Planet Aid UK's support in this matter.

Ukraine is currently facing a colossal waste management crisis. In most areas, there is no organised system for waste disposal. Local residents typically handle it themselves: burn what they can and bury the rest. The current administration is trying to address the issue, but the only solution so far has been to collect waste in one area, where poorer residents sift through it and remove around 20% of usable materials.

A significant amount of waste also ends up in the Tisza River floodplain. During high water levels, this debris often drifts into Hungarian territory, creating serious environmental concerns downstream.
