World Chimpanzee Day and Jane Goodall Institute Events
Since 2018, July 14th has been recognized as World Chimpanzee Day. It marks the day in 1960 when Dr. Jane Goodall first set foot on the shores of Lake Tanganyika in Gombe, Tanzania, to study these mysterious and fascinating creatures, forever changing our relationship with wildlife and nature.
The theme of this year's World Chimpanzee Day is the connection of chimpanzees to us, other wildlife, and nature. In 2023, on the fifth anniversary of this celebration, Dr. Jane Goodall and the global branches of the Jane Goodall Institute are calling on everyone to approach our closest living relatives with empathy and a willingness to act.
On July 14th, starting at 6:00 PM, we will hold an online presentation where we will introduce Dr. Jane's research, and then discuss chimpanzee sanctuaries in Africa. We'll talk about why these sanctuaries are important and the role they play in the survival of the species. The presentation will be given by our Secretary-General, András Kádár.
Last year, the Jane Goodall Institute visited the chimpanzee sanctuary on Ngamba Island in Uganda, where 52 chimpanzees live.
Our volunteers, Kata Bodó and Kata Marokházi, who visited the sanctuary, will share their experiences.
